Along with Egypt, did you know that Habachtal in Austria is also one of the main sources of gem-quality emeralds of archaeological importance?
It is assumed that historic pieces of jewellery are set with emeralds from Egypt but also from Habachtal, a provenance rarely studied to date by the community. So can these emeralds from different mining regions be distinctively identified? What are their specific characteristics?
According to the scientific study carried out by our gemologists, indications such as typical needle-shaped actinolite inclusions are frequently observed in Austrian emeralds. Other inclusions include quartz, plagioclase, albite, phlogopite and pyrite.
What other indications characterise the Habachtal emerald? We invite you to read the scientific article Microscopic, Spectroscopic and Chemical Analysis of Emeralds from Habachtal, Austria in the journal Minerals 2025, 15, 22, written by Maria Nikopoulou, Stefanos Karampelas, Ugo Hennebois, Pierre Gruss, Eloise Gaillou, Emmanuel Fritsch, Annabelle Herreweghe, Lambrini Papadopoulou, Vasilios Melfos, Nikolaos Kantiranis and Aurélien Delaunay.
